there’s a wolf at the door
and he’s smiling and hungry
and you think you could let him in
just for a bit

he sits and he listens
and you start forgetting
he’s been here before
and he sat where he sits

the last time he came
he left marks on the floor
and one claw in the wall
and a scar on your heart

and you with your hand
clutching half of his tail
(which you see he has noticed
you framed as if art)

but still you’ve forgotten
how all of it felt
so you stand up when he does
and go to your wall

you give him the tail
which he reattaches
and straightens with teeth
that could silence your all

so this time the wolf
has come knocking more gently
intent on retrieving
what you stole before

and not till he’s gone
do you realize you’d had him
and he is no longer
ahead in this war.
