these are are light dogfighting craft sent out in front of the corkscrews and chaperones (heavy artillery and mothership, respectively). they’re one-man craft that can sustain a pilot for up to two weeks without landing, so long as they remain undamaged. they shoot small generated balls of dark matter that literally explode, a la the universe, upon impact. these generators can produce endless firepower unless the ship is damaged.

the arms on the side can maneuver so there is nearly full firepower coverage, and they can be folded in during landing and in tight spaces.
