First drawing in my new Moleskine. I did not plan to put so much detail or effort into this but… I really, really like it a lot and want to ink it, and maybe colour. I spent some time doing research on various Egyptian artifacts such as the cartouche and the Ankh.
Also in my research I got distracted and ended up ordering a cartouche of my own with my name on it with a silver chain for nearly sixty dollars… -facepalm- It is pretty though, black and outlined in silver. I feel like such a hipster or something.
(Oh my god, I hope that doesn’t count as cultural appropriation, as far as I understand cartouches aren’t used in Modern Egypt? Oh damn, I hope I didn’t just do a totally douchey thing.)
And no, I don’t understand why an arctic fox is wearing Egyptian jewelry and symbols. I don’t get why Anubis is there either. For some reason I was thinking of the Japanese kitsune and how they live for a very long time. The kitsune’s fur also turns a white colour when they reach a certain age. Anubis is my favourite Ancient Egyptian deity and he is often seen with an Ankh, which represents life. The actual Egyptian hieroglyph means “eternal life”.
Anubis plays many different roles in Ancient Egyptian culture, and one popular, well-known role of his is weighing the heart of a deceased person on a scale against a a feather, deciding the fate of their soul. This also reminded me of the Japanese kitsune, as in stories they are sometimes portrayed as testing a person’s kindness and loyalty.
I don’t know if that made any sense, but uh, I’ve talked too much. So yeah, here.
This is really fucking cool.
