I feel /so/ bad for you two. Then again, there’s always Bob’s Red Mill for, like… every kind of flour you could ever want. (Though, like all magic cure books, I side-eye Wheat Belly, refined grains are pretty terrible overall.)

oh, the idea of it being our magic cure-all book was tossed out before I even read it. I was ready to get on board with the ideas if evidence lined up, and the symptoms he was describing that go away with the elimination of wheat were things that Jake in particular suffers from, so it was worth a shot. and so far, it seems to be pretty right-on.  whether that’s the wheat or the gluten I couldn’t tell ya.

I actually just bought a box of the King Arthur gluten-free flour, though I don’t believe it’s wheat free so we’ll see how we react to stuff made with it. I baked an apple crumble the other night but it only used half a cup of the flour, so there was no real metric for success…

One of you is celiac? :<

both of us have digestive concerns, his more serious than mine, and wheat does seem to be a trigger, especially for Jake. I could probably keep eating it, but a) it’s easier if we’re generally eating the same foods (I can always get my bread fix at lunch) and b) I read the book Wheat Belly and it had some seriously concerning information about the genetic enhancements done to wheat. I’ve been feeling much better and have had way more energy after eliminating especially the junky wheats (like chips, cookies, white bread, etc).

prairie-homo-companion:

diet stuff under the cut, where diet means “thinking about changing aspect of way i eat” as opposed to “get thin!!!!”

okay Em, I wanna tell you about this thing I’ve been reading called Wheat Belly

basically it’s this doctor who has had hundreds of personal patient results that are INCREDIBLY positive when they eliminate wheat from their diets. his reasons: a) humans have fucked with wheat genetically in the last 50-60 years and it is HORRIBLE for our bodies and b) this new brand of wheat is particularly bad because it keeps us hungry and fucks with our blood sugar levels.

he goes on through the book to explain how he has seen all of the problems go away as a result of eliminating wheat.  brain problems. gut problems.  joint problems, sleep problems, even dementia.

it sounds too good to be true (though it sounds difficult, and it kind of is, but it’s more difficult to eliminate the habit than the ingredient itself), I was skeptical myself because “diets” and “fads,” but.

Jake has Crohn’s disease bad and ulcers as a result of it and both have gotten so much better since he’s cut back on wheat. he’s slept better too and he’s lost weight. his mom suffers from arthritis and since she’s cut out wheat she’s been able to move better than before her knee replacement which was three months ago. I’ve had fewer headaches and been able to think more clearly and stay up later.

and we’ve all been less sick even though it’s been cold season. so I don’t know if you’re in a position right now to do it (means a lot more fresh veggies and fruits, meats, and eggs, cheeses and beans), but the results here at least have been pretty undeniable.

(gluten free is an easyish way to start too because you know those things packaged as gluten free don’t have wheat)
