It\u2019s actually pretty simple, and it\u2019s the same reason you can\u2019t see stars in the middle of the day: That dang sun.<\/p>\n<p>If the sun is out, it reflects a massive amount of light off Earth\u2019s surface, far more light than any stars (other than our sun) are giving off.\u00a0<span>On Earth, the molecules in the atmosphere scatter the sun\u2019s light and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=isrHUfFiNTg\">make our sky blue<\/a> and starless in the day time. To an astronaut on the day side of Earth, there\u2019s no atmosphere to scatter a blue sky, but the effect on the stars is equally obfuscating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Staring into the void, an astronaut\u2019s eyes don\u2019t have the dynamic range to see tiny, dim dots of light when there\u2019s other sources of illumination around. It\u2019s similar to how it\u2019s hard to look out a window into the dark of night when you\u2019re in a lit room.<\/p>\n<p>The same thing happens on the moon. That\u2019s why Apollo pictures are so brilliantly lit, <a href=\"http:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap021212.html\">but the sky above them is devoid of stars.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If an astronaut is on the\u00a0<em>night<\/em> side of Earth, and there\u2019s no light from the moon, then they can\u00a0<em>definitely\u00a0<\/em>see stars. <strong>Here\u2019s some gorgeous video proof:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I am so excited about this as research for the Gus Gillis series! she&rsquo;s going to have a really horrifying hour or so spinning in space, unable to see the stars, feeling\u00a0<em>very\u00a0<\/em>lost. it&rsquo;ll be a big growth opportunity for her.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>jtotheizzoe: Wouldn\u2019t it be ironic if astronauts got to go up to space only to see no stellar beauty?
