These bursts can be roughly divided into two kinds, ones lasting less than two seconds, and ones lasting up to minutes.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><small>However, the strange gamma-ray burst <a href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/10474-star-explosion-shines-christmas-ornament-hubble-photo.html\">detected on Christmas Day 2010<\/a> by NASA\u2019s Swift satellite lasted at least half an hour.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><small>Scientists think shorter gamma-ray bursts are generally caused by merging neutron stars \u2014 dead stars made up of super-dense neutron matter.
