You\u2019ve got to be there, you\u2019ve got to be present.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Per Bak Jensen<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Danish photographer, <strong>Per Bak Jensen<\/strong> (born 1949) is often said to be a pioneer in his field.\u00a0In his indefatigable search for a photographic expression he has created a number of photgraphic\u00a0series, which have placed him as one of the most important fine art photographers in Scandinavia.\u00a0For Bak Jensen, who never digitally manipulates his images, it is essential to catch a certain essence\u00a0of timelessness of the landscape, which, by his own words, set out to capture \u2018the being of places\u2019.\u00a0His photographs frame locations and moods rather than people, and his unique feeling for atmosphere\u00a0and the milieu is evident.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europe.org.uk\/2012\/01\/20\/near-and-far-landscape-photographs-by-per-bak-jensen\/\" title=\"per bak jensen\">12 Star Gallery, Europe House<\/a>, London, is an informal survey of a number\u00a0of Bak Jensen\u2019s most notable large-scale landscape images of Denmark, Greenland and Northern\u00a0Germany, curated by Barry Phipps, University of Cambridge. The photographs may be regarded as\u00a0pauses between things and events, with the quietness of spaces separating moments, yet are still\u00a0moments themselves. As Barry Phipps suggests:<\/p>\n<p>If you speak with Per Bak Jensen you learn that his fundamental aim is to capture \u2018the being of\u00a0the places\u2019. Yet, there is more to retrieve from Bak Jensen\u2019s photographs than what the subject\u00a0of those images alone can bear. They appear t stand outside of everyday time. For the time of\u00a0these photographs is a long breath where the movement of birds and planes are veiled out,\u00a0and the sound of the waves on the water have been frozen by the camera\u2019s shutter speed.\u00a0Yet, the subjects of his large pictures, despite their mute immobility, still feel alive.<\/p>\n<p>Per Bak Jensen was until recently an associate professor at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts\u00a0in Copenhagen and through his unique photographic working methods he has inspired many young\u00a0Scandinavian artists. His work is represented in many public collections worldwide, such as MOMA,\u00a0New York, Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York and Biblioth\u00e9que Nationale, Paris.\u00a0Barry Phipps is a Fellow and Curator of Works of Art at Churchill College, University of Cambridge\u00a0and has previously curated a number of highly acclaimed exhibitions, including Lines of Enquiry and\u00a0Beyond Measure at Kettle\u2019s Yard Gallery, Cambridge. He continues to lecture and write on contemporary\u00a0art and inter-disciplinary related topics.
